24HourCoffeePeople is a bustling coffee shop on the outskirts of London: this blog shares moments where caffeine isn’t the main event but the people who visit or work there really are.
Today is as good a day as any to start this story about a small coffee shop located in London. I check in every day at about 8.30am to order a cappuccino to go. Today, though, I’m late and when I arrive, there’s milk all over the red tiled floor, with little trainee barista Leya following the white splodges with a huge blue kitchen roll, mopping around the feet of customers and spindly legs of the bar stools. Nobody takes any notice of Leya-on-the-floor; they’re in a state of shock. The real Cameron Diaz came in and ordered a latte. They’re still stunned. Barista Fabian is shaking while he tops a mocha with froth, and Barista Milo – one of the few Italian baristas left at 24HourCoffeePeople (but more later on that particular subject), is completely still. The whole cafe is at a stand-still, frozen in their celebrity moment. We’re more used to the Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen standard of celebs, but for this day, we’re an A list drop-in. Turns out Cameron is the girlfriend of an Essex brick-layer turned male model, whose previous squeeze was Jennifer Aniston. He now owns a house overlooking the green next to 24Hour and it seems like his new girl slept over.
